The International Phycological Society (IPS), established in 1960, is committed to advancing the field of phycology by fostering the dissemination of phycological knowledge and promoting global collaboration among phycologists and related organizations. Incorporated as a non-profit public benefit corporation in the State of California, USA, the IPS serves as a vital platform for international cooperation in the study of algae. Every four years, the IPS convenes the esteemed International Phycological Congress, bringing together experts and enthusiasts worldwide to explore cutting-edge developments in algal research.

In celebration of this spirit of collaboration, the Philippines led by the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines-Diliman is hosting the 13th International Phycological Congress from June 8 to 13, 2025, in the picturesque setting of Panglao, Bohol. Situated amidst the stunning landscape of Panglao Island, alongside its counterpart municipality Dauis, Panglao is renowned for its vibrant diving spots and luxurious tourist resorts. The name Panglao, thought to have originated from its former designation Panglawod, meaning “to the open sea”, or perhaps derived from panggaw, a local term for a traditional fishing tool, encapsulates the island’s rich maritime heritage and natural beauty.
